The STVPS employees attended the Philippine Conference on New Evangelization with the theme “Of One Heart and Soul” ( Acts 4:32) at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion last July 28-30, 2017, sponsored by the Office for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, and the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines.
The objectives of the conference were: (1) To lead the participants to a deeper encounter and communion with Jesus, the source of our unity and community; (2) To awaken in the participants a sense of being “for one another” as we reflect on the meaning of Church as communion and the concrete manifestations of a participatory Church; (3) To challenge the participants to a missionary lifestyle and transformation as we explore the necessity of communion-in-mission in being Christian today.
The conference was divided into three topics: HEART ENCOUNTERS (Communion with Jesus), MAKING ROOM (Communion with the Church), and EMBRACING MISSION (Communion with the World).
The first day of the conference started with the Misa ng Bayang Pilipino presided by His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, Archbishop of Manila. The Eucharistic Celebration was in honor of Sto. Niño for the forthcoming 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines in 2021. It was followed by the Blessing and Inauguration of the Exhibit on Refugees and Martyrs. The 6,150 participants, including the 1,300 youths, were welcomed with the message of Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, OP, UST Rector Magnificus that was read by Professor Giovanna Fontanilla. The Conference Overview was given by Fr. Jason H. Laguerta, OPNE Director. His Emincence Cardinal Tagle formally opened the PCNE 4 by asking the participants to wave the white round fans.
The first session of the conference was the Heart to Heart with Cardinal: Witnessing to Communion with guests: Dingdong Dantes, Founding Chair of YES Pinoy Foundation; Bro. Rodito Mahinay, member of Couples for Christ; Sr. Mary Jane Caspillo MMS, head of the Medical Mission Sisters; Dimples Romana, a celebrity Marian devotee; and Alden Richards, Ambassador of Habitat for Humanity. They are different people of different experience but all are communioned with one God. During the plenary session, Ms. Delia Dalisay, Philippines Co-director, Focolare Movement shared the experiences of some of her members on how they met Jesus in their lives and how their lives were changed. In the concurrent session, the STVPS employees attended the Religious Education Subtrack titled “Kapit Ka sa Akin, Hindi Kita Bibitawan”: a Spirituality of Communion with Fr. Renan Michael F. La Guardia SDB.
The Day One of PCNE 4, invited us to open our hearts with Jesus for us to experience His ineffable love and mercy; awakened us that Jesus is the source of our communion, that in HIM, we are made one.

The second day of PCNE started with the Eucharistic Celebration in honor of Nuestra Señora Dolores of Pakil Laguna. It was presided by Most Rev. Fr. Bernardito C. Auza, Apostolic Nuncio, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations. It was followed by the plenary session on Being Christian in the Age of Global Indifference by Most Rev. Salvatore Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization. Witnessing to Community was presented during the panel presentation of Richardson Da Silva, a graduate of Facenda da Esperenca and Dr. Carmi Ngan-oy of Sisters of Mary Girlstown. They shared their commitment with God in making room for those who are in need. During the concurrent sessions, the employees attended the same subtrack titled “Parokya at Eskwela: Iisang pinagmulan, iisang patutunguhan” with Dr. Pilar I. Romero, who discussed the common mission of the school and the parish as ecclesial institutions. It explained how the different aspects of the school can be integrated in the parish life. Another session was titled “Tara Na! Mag JEEPGY Tayo”: A Whole School Approach to Communion with Nature. It was discussed by Dr. Donna Paz T. Reyes where she focused on ecological integrity and showed the whole school approach in education that can be used in revolving around Communion with Nature.
The Day Two of PCNE 4 focused on the challenges that we are facing today; that communion with Jesus leads us to share our gifts and live in solidarity with others in spite of our differences; that we should open ourselves to the world of others and embrace all especially those who have been abandoned by human families and societies; that we should explore on how we can cultivate a culture of openness and participation in the parishes and communities.

The third day of the conference started with a morning prayer. It was followed by a plenary session on The Role of the Church in the Community of Nations led by Most Rev. Bernardito C. Auza, Apostolic Nuncio Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations. After that was the panel presentation on Witnessing to Mission by the panel guests Ms. Bai Rohaniza “Honey” Sumdad-Usman, Ms. Clarissa Isabelle Delgado, Mr. Ruel and Mrs. Mary Anne Aguirre, and Mr. Ernie Abringue. Then group reflection on Communion in Mission was separately done according to subtrack.
The Day Three of PCNE 4 focused on our primary tasks as missionary disciples. Whenever or wherever we are, whatever circumstances of life, we are always summoned and sent by Jesus to proclaim His message of healing and salvation.

His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle synthesized the three-day conference into three images: (1) Opening of the Roofs, (2) Wandering and Journeying, and (3) Closed doors but opened wounds.

The three-day conference was a successful one to all of us. We celebrate the message of unity and harmony. We share one heart and soul as a community.
