What could have been a simple procession of patron saints of each section from preschool to fourth year high school as the opening salvo of the 48th Foundation Anniversary of the Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parochial School turned out to be a time to help families whose houses were submerged in flood waters.
After the late advisory of suspension of classes in Pasig City, the school principal took no haste to announce the cancellation of classes and the procession.  He spent the time with indefatigable school maintenance personnel and some teachers to secure school pertinent documents in case water will flood the office.
At around 9:00 o’clock a.m., families of students requested to take shelter in the school.  The principal instructed the security and non-teaching personnel to document the families entering the school premises.  They were housed in the dining area of the second floor, the canteen, the parents lounge, and the corridors carrying their important belongings wrapped in plastic bags and containers.  Comfort rooms were opened for their use. The Tropical storm Mario enhanced the habagat’s rain that caused the flooding in the residential areas near the river bank where families of the students reside.
All preparations for the celebration of the 48th Foundation Anniversary to highlight the Family Day will not be put to waste as all activities are moved on Oct. 4, 2014.
What could have been a simple but joyful celebration turned out to be a time to help and share.  We pray that Sto.Tomas de Villanueva will help us sustain the spirit. Amen!
