By: Diana E. Avena

Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parochial School held its first Youth Camp last October 19-20, 2019 for Grade 9 and Grade 10. The camp centered in this year’s theme, “STVPS: Beloved, Gifted and Empowered. The event showed great opportunity for students to build up their relationships with one another while also strengthening relationship with our God Almighty and our Catholic faith. The event started with the praying of the Holy Rosary led by the Grade 10 students Mariane Austria (STA) and Alexine Maloping (DM). Then the students were tasked to write a personal prayer on small pieces of paper handed by the teachers. The letters were offered and burned later that night. Students also worshipped led by Sir Al Vergara. In that moment, one could really feel the presence of God with everyone singing along and feeling the music. A speaker named Sir Ping Javier came to talk to us about the upcoming Year of the Youth and the history of the themes of the church. Everybody was stoked to listen and we learned that we really do just have to trust what God has in store for us. The next activity was an intimate group sharing. A candle was lit at the very center symbolizing the Holy Spirit. This was, by far, the longest activity since everyone had so much to share, so much weight in their hearts to put down, so much to open up and let out. The last activity that night was the Taize prayer where we offer the prayers that we wrote earlier into the fire. After the prayer, everybody was called to get some rest as there will be a mass to attend tomorrow.
Morning came, and the students attended the Holy Mass along with their teachers. Breakfast was served after the mass when we were all escorted back to the school to collect our things. The bonds were sure strengthened more after the overnight camp whether it may be with each other, or with God. I’m sure we can all agree that it was indeed a very blessed event.
